[[ CookieDough's Guide: How to tack up your horse ]]

Grooming
grooming means caring for a horses coat. It is something that will keep your horses skin healthy, it will also make your horses coat smooth and glossy.

Grooming Kit:
- Dandy brush
- Metal curry comb
   - Hoofpick
- Rubber curry comb
   - Sponges
- Water brush
 - Soft body brush

Tacking Up
Saddling....
1. Tie up your horse. Then from the near side lift the saddle and and numnah onto the horses neck, above his withers. then slide them both down to his back.
2. Tuck the numnah up into the arch that runs along the middle of the saddle. check that it is resting smoothly under the saddle flaps.
3. From the off side, bring the girth over so that it hangs down. then from the near side, reach for it under your horses belly.
4. Do up the girth buckles, enough to keep the saddle in place. The girth does not need to be fully tightened until you are about to ride.
5. Finally, run your hand under the girth to check it isnt pinching your horses skin anywhere. Make sure you do this on both sides.

Putting on a Bridle....
1. Lift the head piece and reigns up to your horses face. With your free hand lift the reigns right over his ears and onto his neck.
2. Gently press the bit against his lips. if he doesnt accept it, squeeze the side of his mouth with your thumb. Be careful not to bang his teeth.
3. Lift the head-piece gently up over your horses ears, and pull his forelock over the browband. Fasten the throatlash and noseband to secure the bridle.

A Full Groom:
1. First pick out the horse's feet. if he is muddy, dandy brush his neck, body and legs lightly, following the direction the hairs in his coat grows.
2. Next, body brush his neck, body and legs. Use long firm strokes. Scrape the body brush with the curry comb every few strokes to remove dirt.
3. To do his head undo the headcollar and, holding his nose gently brush his face. Then sponge his eyes, nose and lips with warm water.
4. Re-tie him and brush his mane over to one side, so you can body brush under it. Then use a damp water brush to bring it back over in sections.
5. In case he kicks stand to one side of him and brush his tail with the dandy brush it through in sections starting from the bottom.
6. Polish the coat with a damp stable rubber. If he wears a rug put it on and lastly paint his hooves with hoof oil.

Ready to ride
When you are ready to ride, tighten the girth, one whole at a time, if there are 2 or 3 buckles make sure they are all as tight as eachother. Then pull the stirrups down and you are ready to get on! :)

Hari Raya [Day of Celebration]

Hari Raya, “pilgrim festival”, is celebrated at the end of the fasting month, which is known as Ramadhan. Hari Raya is a time for muslims to celebrate their personal triumph. During Ramadhan, Muslims are required to abstain from satisfying daily needs between sunrise and sunset, fasting during this month is compulsory, or wajib. All Muslims except the young, old or infirm must fast. The date that Hari Raya begins is chosen by the area and shape of the moon, once ramadhan ends the moon is then known as “the new moon”. Hari Raya translated to English is “Day of celebration”.

The new moon tells Muslims the month is over and that they can celebrate Hari Raya, which is also known as Hari Raya Pusa or the festival of Aidilfitri.

In preparation for Hari Raya people decorate their houses with the new furniture and decoration. Mosques, government and commercials are also decorated and brightly lit to celebrate the day. The decorations used are often yellow or gold, but the majority are green, this is because the colour green is associated with the Islamic religion.

Women start to sew curtains and buy new clothes for their families a month early. Some people even renovate their houses so that it will be more suitable and appealing to guests that come for open houses during Hari Raya. On the morning of Hari Raya muslims will wear new clothes and go to the mosque to pray. During their prayers they offer thanks to god and ask for forgiveness from their elders, the younger members of a family approach their elders (parents, grandparents etc) to seek forgiveness, to salam (Muslim equivalent of a handshake), then kiss the hands of the older person as a sign of respect. This is an important tradition to follow, according to Muslims. By doing this Hari Raya has become the time to forgive and forget past fights that may have happened in the past year.

Hari Raya is also a time when lots of traditional food is found, the favourites are ketupat, longton, nasi pedang and beef rending. When the muslims visit their families it is a tradition for the children to be given money which is in green packets.

During Hari Raya many people leave the city and go back to their hometown, “kampung”, to reconnect with their families during the celebrations, this is known as “balik kampung”. Many muslims look forward to celebrating Hari Raya, this is because they can reconnect with their family, who they may not have seen for a long period of time.

Selamat Hari Raya! Have a good one xx

Malaysia.Malaysia.Malaysia (:

In my 4 years of being here in Malaysia I have noticed that Malaysians love their food. Whenever I went out with my friends the first thing they would ask me if I was hungry, it seemed that they always were. The first bahasa word I learnt was makan, which proves the importance of food to my friends. Malaysian cuisine is something that should be shared around the world to introduce people’s taste buds to amazing flavours.

There are so many tropical fruits found in Malaysia, some have been grown locally and other have been imported. You can find a wide variety of fruits in supermarkets, village grocer and cold storage, fruits are also sold at night markets and stalls. Some fruits are seasonal, which means you can only get them during certain times of the year, like rambutan and durian. Different people prefer different ways to eat the fruits, for example banana and jack fruit can be fried and made into fritters where as mango and passionfruit are best eaten fresh. Most of the fruits can also either be made into juice or jam.

Nasi lemak is the most common dish, you will get it in all restaurants that sell Malay food. Nasi lemak, means rice cooked in cream. Most people eat Nasi lemak for breakfast, however, it can also be found on the lunch and dinner menu. You can find it at the road side stall in a cone shaped packet, or even at restaurants. Nasi lemak is usually eaten with spicy sambal gravy, fried anchovies, fried groundnuts, topped with fried or boiled egg and slices of cucumber.

Kopitiam is the Hokkein word for 'coffee shop'. In Kopitiam’s you can get locally brewed coffee and the 'kaya' toasted bread. Kaya is the rich, delicious and popular Malaysian 'jam' made of coconut milk, sugar and egg. The kaya mixture is spread over the toasted bread, together with a thick helping of butter or margarine.
Satay is made from bite size pieces of meat marinated in a variety of spices. The marinated meat is then skewered through thin bamboo strips and barbecued over charcoal fire until golden brown. A wide range of meat can be used, like chicken, beef or mutton. The sweetish and juicy 'satay' is normally served with sliced cucumbers, onions, ketupat (compressed rice cake) and a spicy sweet peanut sauce for dipping.

The Roti Canai and Teh Tarik combo is a meal for any hour of the day, and it's usually available at Mamak stalls and restaurants, which can be found almost everywhere in the city. Roti canai is the local Indian bread. It is crispy on the outside and soft in the centre aswell as normally being served with dhal. When at a Mamak stall, you are bound to hear, "Teh tarik satu" (One teh tarik) most of the times. It's that popular among the locals. Teh tarik literally means 'pulled tea'. This is a frothy milk tea which has been pulled from one mug to another to increase the aroma and hasten the cooling process. Malaysians tend to have sweet tooth and 'teh tarik' can be very sweet. A less sweet version can be found, it is called, 'kurang manis' (less sugar).

Banana leaf is made of heaps of rice piled on a banana leaf loaded with different curries, dhal, vegetables, rasam (tamarind soup) and fried papadoms and Indian crispy. Game for Indian dessert? Then try the thick and sweet payasam to complete your lunch.

Once you have tried all the different flavours and spices, you will understand the Malaysian’s love for food. Thanks for reading! :)

Malaysiiaa :).

Colours of Malaysia is a festival that happens every year, it is a celebration of the countries unique diversity of cultures. I love seeing how proud Malaysians are of their country, of which there is so much to be proud of, and to respect. During the festival, there are loads of traditional performances to be seen, colourful parades aswell as arts and crafts. This yearly event brings all the heritage and culture of Malaysians from all states into one spectacular event. In this parade, the Malaysian culture is shown in forms of various arts such as dances, music, clothing designs and crafts. This parade gives the people of Malaysia the opportunity to reconnect experience and enjoy the traditions of other races and religions.

Being an expact I don’t celebrate any festivals that go on around Malaysia, however I do experience them. I like watching my friends when a festival is coming up, they seem to get more excited, whether it is because of the holidays or the actual celebration, I don’t know...but the enjoyment in their eyes makes me happy for them. There are so many opportunities for Malaysia to celebrate their diversity, colours of Malaysia, hari raya, merdeka, and so many others. I think the more celebrations Malaysia has the closer everyone becomes, this is what has made 1Malaysia so effective.

1Malaysia is a campain which was created by the Malaysian Priminster, Minister Najib Tun Razak in September 2008. 1Malaysia was created to unite the people of Malaysia, creating the perfect culture within the society, connecting everyone to each other. 1Malaysia was created in order to provide a place of free speech, giving people the chance to discuss important matters, as a nation. By doing this the nation has the chance to hear different sides of the same story, giving the government a clearer idea of the situation. many people are hoping the 1Malaysia will create more diversity in Malaysia, or atleast keep the diversity that has already been created.

Merdeka is Malaysia’s celebration of its independence. The independence it gained over 50 years ago. During the Merdeka celebrations, malaysian’s will dress in their national dress.

I respect the people who wear these clothes, I think this is mainly because where I am from we have no national dress, or clothes that tell people where we are from. This makes me jealous because not only does Malaysia keep its national dress code, but they also continuously celebrate the olden time traditions, and they do the same thing year after year, with many festivals. I envy Malaysia because of this, as the United Kingdom do not have as many traditions that have been celebrated for decades, and possibly centuries.

Malaysians have so much to be proud of, the development of their country yet their ability to keep traditions alive and strong, the diversity of Malaysia, the food, the industries, and of course the people. It is the people of Malaysia who keep the traditions alive it is up to the people of Malaysia to decide their country’s future, and it is the people who will pass along the traditions and culture to younger generations.

thankkkkksss for reading :)

college college college (:

College life....wow where do I start! I love the freedom we are given, the opportunity to leave the campus when we want and the fact that Sunway Pyramid is so nearby it gives us something to do when we have those long breaks with no classes! The first thing I noticed about college life was how different it is to high school, not only with being around older people, and the freedom, but also the independence we are given to make our assignments. So far I love it :)
First day I walked into the classroom, I knew I would be the only white person, and I was scared that it would jeopardise the opportunity for me to make friends, because I was different to everyone else, BUT luckily! I met the people I did on that day, and they included me in everything, making me feel like it was where I belong, and that’s something I really appreciate, and through that I met other people who I have become friends with :)

Each time I visited the campus to sort things out, such as my visa, or payments before the semester started it made me nervous about the size of the campus combined with my terrible sense of direction, which would allow me to get lost…a lot! But I quickly got used to it, I think the whole campus being separated into different blocks helped hugely, even though I still get lost.
With the campus still being under construction and all, I really don’t know how it will turn out, but im looking forward to finding out! Can’t wait until STARBUCKS opens :) yummy! I am pretty sure I will be in there a lot, and will most likely be relying on it to wake me up in the mornings.

For the first week of college, I wasn’t sure if I was going to be staying, because I hadn’t gotten my results then, so I was scared about making some really great friends, such as Shazwani, Kavita, Afiqah, Dhanisha, Ellie, Irene, Shana, Amalina, Mariah and Mitchell, because I didn’t know if I was going to have to leave after the first few weeks, im so relieved I passed, because I love all of them so much already and its great to know I get to spend the next 2 and a half years with them. Thanks to these people, I look forward to going to college :)
